Your programme

More time for purposeful practice.

NeuroRecovery is delivered through intensive programmes: five days per week, with two to three hours reserved each day. Programme blocks are agreed over two weeks, with ongoing review to guide the next steps.

We begin with a detailed neurological and functional assessment, discuss what matters to you, and build an individual plan. Your goals might include standing more confidently, walking around your home, using your affected arm or managing everyday movements.

Sessions combine active rehabilitation, hands-on support and appropriate treatment. Rest breaks, pacing and changes to activities are built in according to fatigue, symptoms and tolerance. Two to three hours is the session window, rather than continuous exercise.

Home-based work helps practise tasks in your own surroundings. Our clinic within ETL in Workington offers a gym environment for suitable strength, balance and mobility work. Suitability and practical arrangements are discussed before booking.

NeuroRecovery is an intensive programme service. Contact Kelly to discuss your needs, availability and whether this format is suitable for you.

What we work on

Rehabilitation with everyday life in mind.

Gait & mobility

Walking practice, stepping, changes of direction and safe use of walking aids where needed, progressed around your abilities and goals.

Balance & coordination

Practice in sitting, standing and movement to develop control and confidence, with support and challenge adjusted to you.

Strength & function

Individualised strengthening and functional training, including sit-to-stand, transfers, reaching and meaningful daily tasks.

Arm & hand rehabilitation

Task-specific practice for reaching, grasping and using the arm or hand, where appropriate to your presentation and goals.

Hands-on treatment

Manual techniques and movement assistance where clinically appropriate, alongside active practice and exercise progression.

Assessment & review

Goal setting, ongoing reassessment, progress measures and home exercises, with family involvement and professional liaison where appropriate.

Your initial assessment

The foundation of your programme.

Your rehabilitation starts with understanding you—your condition, how it affects everyday life, and what you want to work towards.

The initial assessment gives us time to explore your medical history, current abilities, difficulties and priorities. We assess the areas relevant to your needs, which may include movement, strength, balance, coordination and everyday tasks. Together, we identify meaningful goals and establish a starting point for your rehabilitation.

The work continues after your appointment

Your assessment informs the detailed research and planning that takes place before your programme begins. This includes:

Reviewing relevant research

Exploring the scientific evidence around your condition and rehabilitation approaches relevant to your needs.

Interpreting your assessment findings

Considering how your movement, symptoms and current abilities affect exercise selection.

Designing your programme

Selecting exercises and activities with a clear purpose, linked to your goals.

Adapting exercises to you

Adjusting positioning, support, resistance, complexity and rest to suit your abilities and response.

I allow a week between your assessment and the start of your programme for this preparation.

A programme that develops with you

Once your programme begins, I monitor how you respond and adjust exercises, support and progression as needed. Your assessment provides a baseline that helps us review changes over time.

The time you spend in the clinic is one part of your rehabilitation. Behind each programme is research, clinical reasoning and ongoing planning, focused on your individual needs and goals.

Evidence-informed care

Practice. Progression. Reassessment.

Neuroplasticity-based rehabilitation

Neuroplasticity is the nervous system’s ability to adapt. Meaningful, repeated practice provides opportunities for motor learning. We use task-specific rehabilitation, progressive challenge and feedback to work towards your individual goals.

Progress differs between people and conditions. We review your response and adapt the programme; we do not promise a particular level of recovery.

Putting NICE guidance in context

NICE’s stroke guideline NG236 recommends needs-based rehabilitation across a multidisciplinary team, with a combined target of at least three hours a day on five days a week where appropriate. This includes disciplines such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy.

That combined recommendation is not a prescribed dose for one practitioner, an endorsement of NeuroRecovery, or a requirement for every neurological condition. Our session plan follows your assessment, goals and tolerance, and can complement other services.

Shockwave & electrotherapies

Extracorporeal shockwave treatment, electro-acupuncture and other electrotherapies may be included where assessment indicates they are appropriate. These support a broader rehabilitation plan and do not replace active, functional practice.

Research suggests shockwave may reduce post-stroke spasticity in some people. Treatment protocols and study quality vary, and improved muscle tone does not necessarily translate into better everyday function.

Now available

FES foot drop system

We now have a Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) foot drop system available at The Rehab Room. Suitability is assessed individually, and use is guided by your assessment and rehabilitation goals.

NeuroRecovery programme agreement

Your commitment, explained.

This summary explains the Intensive NeuroRecovery booking agreement. Your personalised schedule and full written terms are provided before you book. Fees and any travel arrangements are discussed privately and confirmed in writing.

A two-week programme block — what you book and why

You book an initial two-week block, normally 10 planned sessions: five days per week, two to three hours per day, agreed after assessment. This reserves dedicated one-to-one rehabilitation time and creates a structured period for repeated, goal-focused practice.

Progress is reviewed at the end of each block. Further blocks require a new written booking and advance payment; there is no automatic renewal. This gives you and Kelly an opportunity to review goals, tolerance and the next steps.

Assessment, booking and advance payment

The initial neurological assessment is separate from the programme booking. Your needs, daily session plan, dates, location, fees and travel terms are agreed before payment. Your programme place is confirmed after dates are agreed, the written terms are accepted and advance payment is received.

Advance payment reserves the agreed clinical time, preparation and programme planning. It does not remove your statutory rights or create an automatic “no refunds” rule.

What is included — and what the programme does not cover

Your plan includes one-to-one neurological rehabilitation, goal setting, reassessment, gait and functional retraining, balance, strength and coordination work, daily-task practice, a personalised home programme, clinical notes, progress reviews and planning between sessions. Hands-on treatment, shockwave and electrotherapies are used only when suitable and with consent. Our FES foot drop system is available where assessment indicates it is suitable.

Personal care and home-care services are not included. Arrange carers or other support where needed so rehabilitation can take place safely. Kelly works within her professional scope and can liaise with other professionals where appropriate.

Attendance, lateness and changes in your health

Keep the agreed session times available, arrange transport or support, and tell Kelly promptly if you will be late or absent. Late arrival normally does not extend the session because the following clinical time may already be reserved.

Report changes in health, medication, fatigue, falls or symptoms. For home sessions, provide safe access and a suitable space. These details help Kelly adapt treatment, pacing and the level of support safely.

Cancellations, missed sessions and illness

Contact Kelly as soon as circumstances change. Cancellations are considered fairly and individually, with any charge or retained payment based on reasonable direct loss, taking account of costs saved and whether the reserved time can be filled. There is no automatic loss of every advance payment.

Missed sessions may be rearranged only when clinically suitable and practically possible; replacement sessions or extensions are not guaranteed. Exceptional illness, hospital admission or significant medical changes are considered individually. If The Rehab Room cancels, replacement arrangements, credit or an appropriate refund will be discussed.

Cancellation rights and starting sooner

Your statutory rights remain. Where a statutory 14-day cancellation period applies to your booking, the written agreement explains how to cancel. If you ask to start during that period, this requires an express request; any applicable payment for services already supplied is proportionate. The full terms explain the rights that apply to your booking method and circumstances.

Consent, expectations and concerns

Treatment consent is separate from the payment agreement and can be withdrawn at any time. Ask questions about any technique and discuss alternatives; agreeing to reserve a programme place does not mean agreeing to every treatment.

We work towards agreed goals and measure progress, but cannot guarantee a particular recovery level or timeframe. Respect, safety, records, privacy and the process for raising concerns are covered in the written agreement. Contact Kelly if anything is unclear before you book.

Before you get started

Your questions, answered.

Who is NeuroRecovery for?

People following stroke or brain injury, and people with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s or MS, may be suitable. Assessment considers your goals, medical needs, fatigue and ability to take part in an intensive format. Rehabilitation may focus on improvement, maintaining function or practical strategies, depending on your condition.

Can I book occasional NeuroRecovery sessions?

NeuroRecovery is intensive programmes only: five days per week, two to three hours per day, in agreed two-week blocks. MSK treatment is available separately through individual clinic appointments.

Can rehabilitation take place at home?

Yes. Programmes can be home-based or clinic/gym-based in Workington. We discuss location, access, available space, equipment and travel arrangements before confirming your programme.

What happens before the programme?

A detailed neurological and functional assessment helps identify your priorities and whether the intensive programme is suitable. Goals, planned activities, session times and practical arrangements are agreed together.

Is FES available now?

Yes. We now have an FES foot drop system at The Rehab Room. Use depends on individual assessment, suitability and your rehabilitation goals.

How do I enquire?

Contact Kelly with a brief outline of your needs, your location and whether you prefer home or clinic/gym rehabilitation. We will discuss suitability and availability, and provide programme details directly.
